Most [if not all!] celebrations are focused around good food and good friends and family. Today I'm giving a special shout out to my mom because today is her birthday! Being from the Philippines, she's told me tradition stipulates you are to eat noodles on your birthday since they signify a long life. While today, we're taking the day off from cooking and spending the day eating out [wahoo!], I did want to share what a traditional filipino celebration looks like. Seeing as you can't taste or smell it through the screen, visualizing it will have to suffice! For a friend's recent going away party, my mom was kind enough to cook this huge spread of filipino treats: pancit [noodles], two kinds of lumpia, vegetarian and pork [fried rolls, similar to an egg roll...such a guilty pleasure, but worth every bite!] and [not pictured] chicken adobo [stewed chicken dish in a delicious vinegar sauce]. When it's just the two of us celebrating, cooking all this food doesn't make all that much sense, but looking at these photos is enticing me to make an exception! I really need her to help write down the specific recipes for all these delectable bites of filipino goodness. Happy Birthday, Mom! Love, Jo
