I love going over photos taken from past trips. When I've just gone on the trip, I'm overwhelmed by the sheer number of photos, and don't fully appreciate each individual photo until long after. Such is the case with my trip to Hawaii a few months back. I nearly forgot about our afternoon spent at the Alii Kula Lavender Farm, found at the base of Mt. Haleakala on Maui. The lavender was a bit past season, but the striking protea, succulents and other tropical flowers were in full bloom. I've been to this spot almost every time I've been to Maui, but it's beauty is never lost on me.
Though I visited the farm in July, the colors had a warm, restful quality to them that reminded me of a cool fall day. Actually, the area the farm is located is usually quite cool since it's at a higher elevation. I'd love to design a space inspired by these almost other-worldly plants. Combining seasonal colors like marsala and mauve with brights like raspberry and faint, cool hues feels sophisticated and modern.
